A
history rich in tradition began in 1920 when Aeneas P. Hennessy founded
A. P. Hennessy Construction in St. Petersburg, Florida. Emigrating from Ireland
at age 19, Aeneas went to Chicago to make his mark in the construction industry.
He joined his brothers working as a carpenter by day and attending school
at night. In 1916 he became interested in a U.S. possession south of Cuba
called the Isle of Pines, where he purchased half interest in a sawmill.
After a hurricane destroyed most of his trees and with political unrest brewing
in Cuba, Aeneas moved his family to Florida in 1917. Starting with a
construction project for the Catholic Diocese for a new cathedral, A. P. Hennessy
Construction was formed. That first project, St. Mary’s Church, still
serves its parishioners today in downtown St. Petersburg. |
When Aeneas’ two sons,
Tom and Kell joined the company in 1948, it became A. P. Hennessy & Sons.
In 1975, due to union and open shop labor competition, it became
necessary to establish a new company for open shop labor contracts, and
so a sister company was born called Dara-Hennessy Construction Company. [“Dara”
is a Gaelic-Irish word for "second".] The Hennessy family retained
control of the company until 1982, when both companies were merged
into Hennessy Construction Services with Ken Hall as the new owner.

Hennessy Contruction Services is now led by Bronson Alexander, President and CEO, who purchased the company from Ken Hall in 1999. Under his leadership the company has continued to thrive and grow, establishing itself as one of the Tampa Bay area’s premier quality oriented contractors. With our focus on customer service and satisfaction, we have generated more than $300 million in revenue since 1999, much of it with repeat clients. Having withstood the test of time, our success is due in part to A. P. Hennessy's determination and strong core values. Throughout the generations, Hennessy employees have upheld the reputation for integrity that he worked so hard to establish.
